เมื่อวันที่ 6 ตุลาคม 2566 ที่ผ่านมา วิทยาลัยการคอมพิวเตอร์ มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ วิทยาเขตภูเก็ต จัดกิจกรรมบรรยายพิเศษ ในหัวข้อ “The Past, Present, and Future of Databases: A 50-Year Perspective” โดยได้รับเกียรติจากศาสตราจารย์ Shamkant Navathe จาก College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), เมืองแอตแลนตา ในรัฐจอร์เจีย ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เป็นวิทยากรพิเศษ โดยได้นำเสนอมุมมองเกี่ยวกับประสบการณ์ตลอดช่วง 50 ปี ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเทคโนโลยีฐานข้อมูล วิวัฒนาการของเทคโนโลยีฐานข้อมูลตั้งแต่การเริ่มก่อตั้งจนถึง ยุคปัจจุบัน ตลอดจนขั้นตอนต่าง ๆ ของการพัฒนาฐานข้อมูล และให้ข้อคิดเกี่ยวกับความท้าทายและโอกาสที่นักวิจัยฐานข้อมูลจะต้องเผชิญในอนาคตอีกด้วย
ศาสตราจารย์ Shamkant Navathe เป็นผู้ก่อตั้งกลุ่มวิจัยเกี่ยวกับฐานข้อมูล และมีสิ่งพิมพ์มากกว่า 150 ฉบับในหัวข้อต่าง ๆ ในด้าน Databases ตั้งแต่ปี 1990 เช่น การสร้างแบบจำลองและการออกแบบฐานข้อมูล (Database modeling and Database design) การออกแบบฐานข้อมูลแบบกระจาย (Distributed database) การแปลงฐานข้อมูล (Database conversion) การบูรณาการฐานข้อมูล (Database integration) และด้านการประยุกต์ชีวสารสนเทศศาสตร์ (Bioinformatics applications)

On October 6, 2023, College of Computing, Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus organized a special talk on the topic “The Past, Present, and Future of Databases: A 50-Year Perspective” It was honored to have Professor Shamkant Navathe from the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America to be our special lecturer.
The talk presents his unique perspective based on the last five decades that he has spent on studying and contributing to database systems and database technology, the evolution of technology in database systems from its inception to the present era including various stages of database development, and the challenges and opportunities that database researchers will face in the future.
Professor Shamkant Navathe is the founder of the database research group, and has published more than 150 publications on topics in the field of databases since 1990, such as Database modeling and Database design, Distributed database, Database conversion, Database integration, and Bioinformatics applications.
